OHHS Students Make History & Advance to National Level Competition
Video Overview of Exhibit |
For the first time in school history, OHHS students were selected STATE CHAMPIONS and went on to represent CALIFORNIA in the National History Day competition. Juniors Christina Godinez, Christian Gonzalez, and Steven Guevara created their award-winning exhibit on a local San Bernardino event -- the desegregation of public parks and pools in the landmark 1944 case of Lopez v. Seccombe.
The team's exhibit was the most-decorated project at the state level, earning 2 additional special awards -- Social Justice & Diversity, and Best Exhibit on California-related History -- and $200 in cash. Their exhibit was also selected to represent California in the national project showcase held by the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in June. See the video that was displayed on the left. The victory was bittersweet because this year's national contest was held virtually -- so these winners would have to compete from home rather than travel to the University of Maryland where the national contest is regularly held. This also meant the team had to revert their project back to a virtual format in just a few short weeks. Final Virtual Display of Project for Nationals Judges |
5 Students Attend first in-person State Competition in 2 years
Oak's 1st ever State Runner-Up |
After two years of virtual competition, California held the 2022 state contest in person at William Jessup University in Rocklin, CA, just miles from the state capital in Sacramento. All of our OHHS competitors had to quickly build full-scale versions of their virtual exhibits that had been selected as county champions. For the first time, all OHHS students' projects that made it to state advanced to the final rounds of state competition, placing them among the top projects in the state! This was just the first of several historic achievements at this year's state competition.
